October is the best month of the year, sweet treats, new horror flicks and the perfect time to crank the volume up on your favorite blackened sludge track. With so many bands creating music fit for this time of year, it seems strange that almost every 'Top 10' list in the vast online world consists of the same songs. Not to say these songs are bad, in fact many of them are brilliant hits from great artists but how many times do King Diamond, Helloween, Alice Cooper and Ozzy need to be mentioned.
Compiled below are 10 tracks that are perfect for this Halloween season. Let's break away from the mold and listen to some killer new music.
10. Acid Bath- Jezebel Its hard to pick just one song from Acid Baths catalog. Almost every song is packed with such morbid poetic symbolism. Jezebel has always stood out as one of Acid Baths strongest tracks.
Hearts will stop and brain cells pop Apocalyptic high She screams bloody murder as they chop off her fingers So this is how it feels to die But it's okay Yeah everything's okay
9. Annihilator- Alison Hell
Now this one is on a couple other top lists but not nearly enough. Plus skipping out on one of Canadas best metal acts would just be shameful. This song and accompanying album conjures up loads of imagery from classic 80s horror flicks.
Don't look around the corner I might be lurking there Under the bed at night You're up till dawn again
8. Arkham Witch- Burn the Witch
Arkham Witch is a brilliant band who rock that retro NWOBHM feel. Their songs often tell a story much like classic Maiden did. Burn the Witch is a hard rocking anthem perfect for any Halloween party.
Witch woman I loved you don´t you know Your fire burns inside my soul Repent my child before it´s too late See how the devil can steal your fate
7. The Black Dahlia Murder- The Raven
Another band whose majority of work consists of horror and occult inspired lyrics. In the case of the Raven it is hard to deny the roots of classic horror and though the track doesn't have anything to do with the Poe tale, the title instantly brings forth one thought. Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.'
Bird of omens, Ill harbinger of blight, The raven waits with vengeance in his sights.
6. Blood Ceremony- My Demon Brother
Blood Ceremony helped bring back that retro occult rock sound of the 60's and 70's that Black Widow and Coven pioneered. Clearly, occult rock fits into the month of October better than any other. My Demon Brother is a great track about summoning forth a demon, who wouldn't want to try that out!
Dreaming demon, open your eyes We humbly ask of you your presence this night We call your name and offer sacrifice Chanting forbidden hymns in black magic rites
5. Candlemass- The Bleeding Baroness
How could a song based off of Countess Elizabeth Bathory not be on this list. Said to be the worlds most prolific female serial killer, the Countess often bathed in the blood of virgins to retain her youth. Candlemass romanticizes this tale in the Bleeding Baroness and turns it into a thing of beauty.
The Bleeding Baroness Crimes of passion She needs you and feeds you and bleeds you with the rise of the moon The Bleeding Baroness Hours of slumber The spell I'm under
4. The Creepshow- Cherry Hill
Psychobilly horror punks the Creepshow have many tracks that fit the theme but Cherry Hill hits way too close to home. Based off of the House on Cherry Hill, one of Canada's top haunted houses. The stories of Cherry Hill are numerous and many believe that their is more to the house than can be explained.
Darker still as I walk Through the front door My body’s trembling as I make my Way across the floor What’s over there? There’s something moving… Oh my god there’s something touching me!
3. Doyle- Cemeterysexxx
The ex Misfits axeman Doyle von Frankenstein released a solo album last year filled with loads of horror and the macabre. If you want to get lucky this Halloween take the Doyle approach when it comes to seduction.
We'll scale the walls of the funeral home In the dark of night With no one in sight We'll taste a thousand forbidden delights
2. Electric Wizard- Lucifer's Slaves
Though there may be more suitable tracks to choose out of the Wizards extensive catalog. Lucifer's Slaves off of their latest release 'Time to Die' is a brilliant track. Give it a play to anyone who hasn't heard an Electric Wizard song and I guarantee they will be creeped out.
Lucifer's Slaves Beyond being saved You can't beat the dead...
1. Ghost- Year Zero
Realistically Ghost's Infestissumam album is perfect for Halloween. From start to finish it creates an amazing atmosphere of the occult and an eerie sense of wickedness. Year Zero reigns supreme, it literally chants the names of demons and hails Satan. If only one song could sum up Halloween it would be this one.
Hail Satan, Archangelo Hail Satan, Welcome year zero
